Top Fantasy Performers Thus Far

If you are like most NFL football fans, you have probably spent a good chunk of this fall so far huddled in front of your TV, keeping an eye on both your favorite team, and your fantasy roster. Fantasy football is an extremely fun way to stay engaged with players and teams about whom you often wouldn’t care as much, and by this point in the season your team is probably beginning to take shape.

While a couple of weeks can offer a blend of solid projections and fluke performances, by the end of week 5 it is beginning to become clear which players will and will not have standout fantasy seasons. Along these lines, here are a few words on the season’s top performers thus far.

  • Quarterbacks have dominated the fantasy season so far, no matter what system of scoring your leagues uses. This having been said, Aaron Rodgers has probably been the top quarterback of the season, passing for well over a thousand yards already, and amounting a very solid touchdown-to-interception ratio. Rodgers has been nothing short of spectacular, and should continue to put up monster fantasy numbers.
  • Right on Rodgers’ heels, Tom Brady has been just about as good, and has put up very similar numbers. Both QBs are extremely solid, and the difference that makes one more effective than the other might simply come down to which team wins more games.
  • Cam Newton rounds out the list of top quarterbacks (though Drew Brees and Matthew Stafford are in the conversation as well), as the surprise of the season so far. While Newton has not quite kept pace with his first two games (he passed for over 400 yards in both games), he has continue to score touchdowns, both in the air and on the ground. Newton has been a very solid fantasy player thus far.

The primary focus of this article has clearly been on quarterbacks, but this is simply because the players mentioned above have been putting up the most points – by a large margin – this season. Among wide receivers, Wes Welker has arguably been the strongest performer, though Calvin Johnson has been spectacular as well. And, in the running back category (though the position, across the board, is a bit weaker this year in most cases), Darren McFadden is leading the way with a remarkable season thus far.

Of course, the names listed in this article represent only the top performers, and things still change week-to-week. Be sure to keep an eye on trends and top performers as the season progresses.
