The Stone Cold Fantasy Football Defense Locks

I have always been an advocate of the fantasy defense matchups. I never draft a defense or kicker. I always load up on prospects in hopes of finding this year’s sleeper. However, by now I had to make 2 drops in order to get myself a K and a DEF. I just don’t believe in the “draft the best defense early” approach. I feel it always weakens your team ever so slightly. However, I believe Doc over at Razzball and myself are onto something. He takes it a bit deeper then I do expanding into other poor offensive teams. Sometimes using matchup plays with defense can be simple.

My goal this year is to start whatever defense is playing against Cam Newton and Andy Dalton. I firmly believe that it is a contest to the bottom for these two. Neither rookie QB is ready for “NFL Primetime.” They are going to make mistakes and be easy pickings…. even for lesser defenses. So Arizona and Cleveland are 1a and 1b starts recommendations this week.

Carolina has an erratic Cam Newton. His arm is not accurate and he is more adept to take off and run then he is to sit in the pocket and pass. He may snag a TD by running one in on a broken play. However playing Carolina is going to be fairly simple this year. Take away the run and watch them collapse. Don’t give me the Steve Smith “Superstar” argument. This isn’t 2008 and Jake Delhomme ain’t throwing him the ball.

Cincinnati has become the butt of jokes in the NFL. Only in that town can Mike Brown allow his “ego” to get the best of him. There is no doubt that Carlson Palmer is a spoiled “brat.” However, allowing the ego and brat to ruin this franchise is inexcusable. I  ask myself why Marvin Lewis wants this job. Palmer has trade value and Brown should move him in the pitiful attempt at improving this team. I’m not a Dalton hater. I just don’t think that he is ready. Andy Dalton very well may turn into a capable NFL quarterback. BUT he very well could become the next David Carr. David Carr’s career never blossomed because he was beat to hell. Taking a beating like Carr took early on irreparably damages a QB’s psyche. I’m hoping the same doesn’t happen to Dalton. Though odds are it will. Now, Dalton does have some capable pass catchers in AJ Green, Jermaine Gresheim, and Jerome Simpson. The problem lies in the fact that he won’t be able to decifer the blitz and defensive fronts early on. The only way Cincy will win is if the “jailbird” Cedric Benson plays possessed. If you take away the run Cincy will lose on Dalton’s arm. Dalton’s arm is a fantasy defense’s dream!
