Don’t Take the Bait on Tate… Worry Worts take Ward

There are three things I firmly believe in 1) Never-EVER owning handcuffs  2) NEVER play fantasy football scared and 3)  NEVER worry about depth on your roster. Focus instead on the best STARTING lineup . I own Arian Foster in one of my PPR leagues that I partner in. In fact, we traded for him before his injury. Many people have asked would I still have done the trade? The answer is a resounding YES!

One of my fellow readers, JG, has a great line—- “Everyone is an expert.” This line fits in perfect for this situation. ESPN’s job is to be controversial and garner ratings. They employ physicians to support their point of view. That is the reason they are on ESPN’s airwaves. Add to the fact that you can see 5 different docs and get 5 different answers and we are no closer to knowing how severe Foster’s injury is. EVEN WITH HIS MRI IMAGE!  All we fantasy footballers can go by is what the man himself says. Mr. Foster says he will play week 1 and I for 1 believe him.

Now a good percentage of the fantasy community are picking up Ben Tate. Many are trying to peddle Tate for value from the scared owners of Arian Foster. Don’t believe the hype. At best Tate will be a two week player and he is not worth your WR3 or RB3. This article is to help talk Foster owners off the ledge.

Lets talk hypothetical for a moment, assuming the worst that Foster is out for week 1 (which I don’t believe will happen). I’m sure most of you have drafted a backup caliber RB. Some examples would be Mike Tolbert (click here to see my Tolbert predictions), Beanie Wells, Ahmad Bradshaw, or a Tim Hightower (click here for my Hightower prediction). You have to ask yourself— Will these players score more points then Ben Tate?! I believe that anyone on the above list will. Ben Tate has looked good in preseason…but lets not forget that is preseason. Also, I believe Kubiak will employ more of a spilt back approach without Foster. Ben Tate will get the carries for the first two downs but Ward will be brought in for 3rd down and goal line. Also, lets not forget that Ward has MUCH NFL playing experience. He filled in admirably for Foster when he was held out for a quarter last year against JAX — 4 carries for 63 yards and 1 TD. Granted, Foster went on to rush for 180 yards and 2 TDs on 31 carries but that is besides the point 🙂 Ward also had 300 yards and 4 TDs last year in a backup role.

Bottom line is this—- only Foster will put up Foster numbers. Ben Tate will not and Derrick Ward can not. If Foster doesn’t go week 1 against a poor Indy run defense Tate and Ward will fill in and produce. But the two will handcuff each other. I’m not a handcuff believer but if you are such the worrier then drop one of your scrubs and pickup Ward for free. At least in that situation you aren’t making a deal with the devil for one week. However, even if you do pickup Ward one would hope you have a better option on your bench (even if you don’t believe in one!)

—–editor’s note: Yes, I know hamstrings can be a lingering injury. I also know that they can take more the 2 weeks to heal and that it is possible but not probable that Foster could miss time. However, this is gambling and if you don’t got the balls to play then don’t play!

Silly Flukie. It’s one thing to reach for a handcuff, it’s another to pick him up as a waiver wire pick when you have poo like Denarius Moore and Roy Williams wasting space on your bench.

Tate was on the road to stardom before a season ending injury last year. You better believe if Foster misses time (and from the looks of it, he will), Tate will have a golden opportunity. Remember Steve Slaton? Houston RBs come and go.

By the way to wuss out of our bet? You claimed Antonio Brown would finish Top 25 among PPR scoring WRs through Week 16. Is this a bet or not?

@Isles – looks like I was right bout Foster. He will start week one so your boy Tate has ZERO value. As for Brown I think I’ll defer on that one…
