Lee, Lee, Derrek Lee

While I was writing this article, I began to think about the Mighty Ducks Movies. That is where i got the inspiration for the title (Wu, Wu, Kenny Wu).

Derrek Lee has moved place to place in the last year. He was in Chicago and then traded to the Braves. However, Atlanta did not re-sign him because of the emergence of Freddie Freeman. After a short stint with the Baltimore Orioles, Derrek Lee was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates at the deadline. This was a big move for both the Pirates and Lee. Lee gets a chance to play with a team who is somewhat relevant in a division race and the Pirates get a solid bat to help their chances.

Derrek Lee, before the trade, was hitting .246, with 12 HR, 41 RBI, and 15 2B for the Orioles. In his first game for the Pirates, against the Cubbies, Lee hit two home runs and had three RBIs. Lee has also hit well since the All-Star Break, posting a line of .299 BA/5 HR/16 RBI/.612 SLG. His trade also takes him out of the AL East, meaning he will not be playing against the Yankees, Red Sox, or the Rays.

It is hard to believe that it has already been 6 years since Lee was competing for a triple crown with Andruw Jones and Albert Pujols. In that year, Lee hit .335 (career high), 46 HR (career high) and 107 RBI. He also added 50 doubles in that year. Lee’s numbers have not been that good since that season, but he has still been a quality player for his team.

Fantasy Impact

Derrek Lee’s numbers have definitely not been the same in the last two years, showing a steady decline in his talent. He is still a viable fantasy option at first base, because of his second half numbers. If you have come across injury or need a fill-in once in a while, give Derrek Lee a look. He is available in 42.6% of ESPN leagues and 64% of Yahoo leagues.
