Jason Isringhausen and 5 Waiver Wire Pitchers

It should be evident by now that keeping up with your rotation on a start to start basis is crucial to your managerial success as we close in on the fantasy playoffs. The injury bug continues to nag teams around the league and certain pitchers have stepped up to the rubber for teams that will continue to produce, making them viable fantasy options.

Since being promoted to the closer role with the departure of K-Rod, Jason Isringhausen has been nothing but clutch for the Mets, pitching five scoreless innings through four games, recording three saves and a victory. For fantasy owners needy in the saves department, Isringhausen is solid pickup if he’s still available. (40% of ESPN leagues and 66% of Yahoo Leagues.)

Moving right along to the starters that are waiting to be plucked off free agency, these next 5 Starting Pitchers are the waiver wire pickups of the week.

(% available)

1. Josh Collmenter  SP Arizona Diamondbacks (62% ESPN ; 62% Yahoo)

92 IP  / 6-5 / 62 K/ 2.74 ERA / 0.93 WHIP

Collmenter is  2-1 over the month of July coming off a 4 loss streak. His sub 3 ERA and 1 WHIP makes him one of few in the MLB yet he continues to be overlooked across the league. The past 14 days, he’s strung together those two wins, striking out 11 while posting a 1.80 ERA. He’s a big reason the D-Backs are still in the hunt for the playoffs.

2.  Jeff Niemann SP Tampa Bay Rays (78% ESPN ; 83% Yahoo)

67.2 IP / 4-4 / 47 K / 3.86 ERA . 1.29 WHIP

Niemann has pitched four straight quality starts in a row, two of them going in the win column. Looking to bounce back from a rought start, Niemann looks like he’s going to finish the season strong for the Rays.

3. Gavin Floyd SP Chicago White Sox (71% ESPN ; 51% Yahoo)

127 IP / 8-9 / 90 K / 4.11 ERA / 1.20 WHIP

Gavin Floyd has been exceptional in his last two victorious starts coming off a 7 run beat down by the Twins. He’s posted a 0.59 ERA while striking out 10 batters in that two game span and the 3rd place White Sox will need him to continue to baffle batters if they plan on making the playoffs.

4. James McDonald SP Pittsburgh Pirates (90% ESPN ; 90% Yahoo)

109 IP / 7-4 / 94 K / 3.95 ERA / 1.54 WHIP

If you’ve bought into the Buc’s pitching staff, McDonald has the most  upside and has been especially good the past two weeks, earning two wins, striking out 16 batters and not allowing a single earned run. Ride this hot streak and the Pirates bandwagon. (ship)

5. Jake Westbrook SP St. Louis Cardinals

116.2 IP / 9-4 / 63 K / 4.86 ERA / 1.50 WHIP

Despite the +4 ERA Westbrook is 3-0 in July through 5 games and continues to get run support and solid defense behind him. The Cardinals have made their move to win the talented Central and Westbrook will need to compliment new aquisition Edwin Jackson to fill out their rotation and carry them when the Cards can’t back up multiple gems pitched by Chris Carpenter that costed a certain owner a win.
