Trending: Carlos Peña

As the All Star break closes in on the baseball world, a majority of fantasy owners will be looking for the quick fix to mend lackluster offenses or replacment for a fallen star. These last two weeks heading into the break has unearthed an offensive star that was dormant the first part of the season.

For starters, The Chicago Cubs are sitting in 5th place in the NL Central at 32-46  and 7 1/2 games (yes 7) behind the Pittsburgh Pirates. The first half of their season could not have gone any worse, with a combination of poor offensive production and a team ERA of 4.69 up to this point. Carlos Zambrano has been  their best pitcher and he has yet to go the distance in a game and posts a (typical Z) record of 6-4 and a 4.38 ERA. Besides the constant hit parade from Starlin Castro, the Cubs offense has been non existent until just recently with the help of veteran Carlos Pena.

Pena, who basically signed to a 1 year 10 million dollar contract just to hit home runs, had a solid ZERO big flies through the first month of April and didnt break 20 RBI’s until May 26th. It seemed that the AL East had begun to figure out how to attack Carlos’ aging bat by shifting against him; add in his career high 44.9% groundball rate in 2010, and it resulted in a batting average below the Mendoza Line.

FANTASY IMPACT

Since his homerless April, Pena brought his avg up to .258 in May with 7 HR and 19 RBI and this month has only brought more power numbers. After his two homer performance last night in which he took Jhoulys Chacin deep into the count and put two of his pitches into the bleachers, Pena’s June totals are exceptionally better. (9 dingers and 18 RBI) When a veteran cleanup hitter starts to get his eye on the ball it can lead to huge numbers down the stretch. Pena is still available in 10% of ESPN leagues and 35% of Yahoo Leagues. He’s a strong buy for the rest of the season, but don’t expect his average to get beyond .260 or so.
