Dustin Ackley Hits the Diamond

You’ve heard the rumor since mid May: “Mariners top prospect Dustin Ackley to be called up soon.” If you picked him up a month ago, im sure you’ve dropped him by now as the rumors were, well, rumors. The Mariners combination of  ex- Pirate Jack Wilson, an  ancient Adam Kennedy, and a struggling Chone Figgins hasn’t panned out so far this year and on Friday, the M’s will have a new face in their middle infield as Dustin Ackley has finally been called up.

The 2nd overall pick in the ’09 Draft and brought up today from Tacoma, the 23-year-old Ackley hit .303 with 57 runs scored, nine home runs and 35 RBI in 66 games with Tacoma. He also walked 55 times and had a .421 on-base percentage. His late promotion was certainly a function of Super Two calculation and utility infielder Luis Rodriguez was optioned to Tacoma to make room on the roster for Ackley.

“We just felt it was time,” Seattle general manager Jack Zduriencik relayed. “We’d talked about some time in June we thought he’d be ready. In discussion with the coaches down there, they all felt this is the time. He’s been swinging the bat well. So here it is. He’ll be here Friday and we’ll look forward to his contributions.”

Mariners coach Eric Wedge had this comment:

“It’s time to get him up here. He needed more experience at second base at the Triple-A level, but he’s ready to be up here. I hate to option Luis Rodriguez out, but he does have options. I’m sure he’ll be back. But Ackley is a guy we feel strong about. We like his bat and he’s made tremendous strides at second base.”

FANTASY IMPACT

Ackley is a must- have in all leagues, even if you use him as a utility player or backup.  He will be immediately plugged into the M’s lineup , has serious 2B/gap power and will hit for a solid average. Ackley is no fluke and neither are the other young stars in the above .500 Mariners organization. (Pineda and Smoak) Ackley is available in over 90% of ESPN leagues and 85% of Yahoo leagues. This guy will make a great replacement for those who lost Brian Roberts to the DL and Uggla to his slump.
