Fantasy Jailbirds: Michael Vick wants Plaxico in Philly

In 2007, Plaxico Burress caught 70 passes for 1025 yards and 12 touchdowns. He was on the receiving end of a Super Bowl winning fade pass from Eli Manning and was considered an elite wide receiver in the NFL. The following year, on December 2, 2008, Plax got the bright idea to bring a concealed weapon to a night club. He then proceeded to shoot himself in the leg, sending him straight to the slammer faced with two counts of felony possession of a weapon in the second degree. June 6th, Plaxico is set to be released from prison after more than 20 months of his incarceration.

At just 33 years of age, Burress can still be an impact player in the NFL because he is a big, dependable receiver,  undoubtedly creating a market for Plaxico when he returns. In comparison, wide receiver Terrell Owens still had productive years with the Dallas Cowboys in his mid-30s. The layoff from field time in the NFL can be overcome as well. Eagles quarterback Michael Vick returned from a prison sentence and regained his form in 2010. Burress can make a similar comeback, but a lot will depend on how much and where Burress wants to play football.

Gary Myers of the NY Daily News reported that the Eagles are interested in Plaxico Burress, confirmed when Michael Vick went on record saying:

“Absolutely it would be a great addition for our team. I think with the guys we have now I think we can fit him in and make it work. Obviously the ultimate goal at the end of the day is to put that ring on your finger at the end of the year.

“I think certainly Plaxico is going to come out with a chip on his shoulder the same way I did and he’ll go out and help this football team to whatever capacity he can. I think the guys would be willing to embrace him and bring him in. If that happens? Who knows? We talking about “what ifs” now? It would certainly be a good thing.”

If Plax were to sign with the Philly, it would give the Eagles a much needed possession man at their wide receiver position that is currently dominated by speedy, deep ball threats. It’s going to be interesting where Plax will end up, as there are multiple teams such as the Bears, Steelers, and Ravens that could use his talents. Like Vick said though, this is all still in the “what if” stage, and like any other players looking for new teams, will have to wait for this damn lockout to end.
