The Big Fish: Vince Young the Dolphin? Fantasy Perspective

Vince Young was a sloppy, angry, pig  in Tennessee. The only thing uglier would be this impending NFL lockout. However, I see a redemption song for Mr Young. He always wanted to be the big fish. He just couldn’t handle the sharks constantly pounding him. Once the sharks got the flesh and blood it was all over. At least now he may be a mammal- All I keep thinking is that song “you and me baby ain’t nothing but mammals lets do it like they do on the Discovery channel….”

He just might have a better chance as a water loving Dolphin. However, just because I see redemption if he lands in Miami BY NO MEANS do I recommend drafting him as your QB in fantasy football.

Vince Young is a running QB. This bodes well for the Miami Wildcat. He can take a direct snap and go. With the old men Brown and Williams limping near retirement Vince Young might be a 1000 yard runner with this franchise. He has put feelers out to explore his Miami possibilities.

You could argue his best year was his rookie 2006 campaign: 2200 yards passing, 552 yards running, 19 TDs (12 passing, 7 running), 6 fumbles, and 13 picks.  He succeeded then because the league didn’t know his tendancies. He came back with a promising 2007: 2546 yards passing, 395 yards running, 12 TDs (9 passing, 3 running), 5 fumbles, and 17 picks. In 2008 he lost his job to a 40 year old Kery Collins. In 2009 the yo-yo of Collins/Young continued until the final meltdown of 2010 when Jeff Fisher questioned his toughness and his selfish act quitting on the franchise that draftd him 3rd in 2006. That a good enough summary?

Young is a bit of a pussy, no doubt! I feel he could have manned up and played through injury. However, there are two sides to every story. What is getting in the way for Vince Young is his noggin. For every Donovan McNabb and Warren Moon there is one Vince Young.

Vince Young has always had a hard time holding onto the ball. He fumbled 12 times in 06, 10 times on 07, 2 times in  3 games in 08, 8 in 09, and 6 in 2010. That will NEVER change. Fumbles are a 2 point loss in fantasy football leagues. These are valuable points to be lost. Add to that Young’s erractic passing and he is recipe for diaster in fantasy play.

However, fantasy play does not translate into NFL success. Young (if he grows up and grows a set) could be very beneficial for the Miami Dolphin franchise. They are weak at QB and it looks like Henne is not able. You could bring VY into camp on the cheap once he is cut by Tennessee. This is a low risk high reward type of play. The kind King Parcells is known for!
