Psycho Manny and Old Man Damon

Sometimes in baseball the old men still limp onto teams with value. Johnny Damon and Manny Ramirez have landed on the Tampa Bay Rays. Dare I say this is the smartest GM play of the year. The Rays may have a pathetic fanbase and a sad sad stadium but they know how to compete. Maybe they should write a book on how to manage cheap FOR DUMMIES. The Kansas City Royals and Pittsburgh Pirates should buy it.

Manny Ramirez has a lifetime .313 average, 515 homeruns (1/2 taking the juice), and 1830 RBIs. If he can average .290, 100 RBIs, and 30 HRs then this 2 millon was a wise investment. Manny is known to be Manny. The question is whether 2 mil is enough to keep his head in the game. I’m a gambler and in fantasy sports being aggresive pays off. I’m going for Manny in the 9th or 10th round (after I grabbed at least 1 legit pitcher) in my fantasy baseball draft. If Manny can stay engaged he is still one of the best hitters in the game. He is playing a team that is relevant. With the Yankees declining (with lack of pitching) and the Rangers losing Cliff Lee there is a good chance the Rays and Phils will be rematching in the World Series. At least that is what I’m betting in Vegas during my annual trip!

Johnny Damon is a career .287 hitter. He has hit 215 HRs and had 385 stolen bases. At 38 he may have more in the tank then crazy Manny. Though my gut says Manny is going to surprise a lot of people. Damon is so desperate to stay relevant he is wearing the “Rayhawk” now. That reminds me of the wacked out closer on San Fran. At this point WHATEVER works. Damon got 5.5 mil for this year so the Rays feel the same gen pop does. Most baseball experts think that Damon is more relevant.

At this point the two fading stars signed on for one reason. Sheer laziness. Both live in Florida in the offseason and this was an easy match. If the Rays are right they have enough left to get them to the World Series. If you are a professional gambler or a fantasy baseball player this gamble may just payoff…
