Peavy the Pud or Peavy the Stud?

Jake Peavy was fantasy gold. Now, he is a fantasy turd. He screwed a good buddy of mine last year. Alas, injuries are part of the game. Peavy may or may not have value. His injury was straight up wacked- a detached lat muscle?!?! SI’s author Eric Mack made a point about Peavy

If Peavy slips past the first 45 pitchers on draft day his upside is worth the risk. As Eric puts it he could be a top 10 pitcher “if” his injury has healed.

That is one big if but it is a risk I am willing to take. In fantasy sports I always preach the fact that big risk usually will bring big reward. More often then not this approach brings fantasy championships and bragging rights.  With Peavy the risk may not be as big as you think. He threw 40 pitches on February 8th and seems to be on track for opening day.

Peavy is the ACE on the rotation so he will have the opportunity. However, being a 30 year old major league pitcher with 8 years experience, the mileage is on that arm. Freaky injuries can derail and end careers. A MLB pitcher returning from a career threatening injury is usually a bit shaky upon return.
