Fantasy QBs breaking into Tier 1

Much is made of quarterbacks in fantasy football. I’m dedicating this week to QBs on fantasysportsgab.

In many a draft I grab a top flight QB in the first round. This past year I tried another approach taking a a QB no earlier then round 6. It worked and I won two fantasy football championships. However, this piece is to discuss the emergence of QBs that have moved out of tier 2 status and into tier 1. The QB position is becoming quite deep in the NFL. Just look at today’s game- Big Ben and Aaron Rodgers. They were yesterdays 2 and have risen to todays 1.

Josh Freeman – He is the reason I won my keeper league championship. He ranked 6th among all NFL QBs. I made a trade mid season. I traded Ryan Torain for Freeman. Then I flipped out Tom Brady for Knowshon Moreno. Many, many people killed me for this trade. However, I was the won laughing when I took the money to the bank. Freeman and Moreno were fantastic in the championship. Freeman elevated his franchise and had his best statistical year – 3451 yards, 25 TDs, and 6 picks. He will throw for over 4000 yards in 2011-2012- trust me! With the development of Mike Willians and Arrelious Benn he has legit WR targets. Add to that complement a steady Kellen Winslow and he has a nice stable of targets. The only QB that has better targets in the NFC is Michael Vick. Lets not forget that TB found a diamond in the rough in LeGarrette Blount. He now forces the D to respect the run. Freeman didn’t have Blount till the 2nd half of the year. All this bodes well for Freeman’s future. I wouldn’t draft him in round 1 but I would feel confident taking him in round 3.

Matt Ryan – I also bet big on Matt Ryan this year. He was a part of my 2nd championship roster. He finished just outside the coveted “top 10” spot in the NFL at #11. He threw for 3705 yards, 28 TDs, and 9 picks. The Ryan-White connection is ingrained in every fantasy players head! Matt Ryan is a rock solid stud at home. I stole him in round 6 this past year. He may move up 1 round to 5 in a traditional serpentine draft. I feel confident in the stability of the Atlanta franchise. They just reup’d the coach for another 3 years. Atlanta is gonna have some great football for the next 3 years. Get on the Ryan bandwagon.

Matt Cassel – I have dispised this man and overlooked him in fantasy play. I honestly can tell you I will never respect him in fantasy. However, we did (my partner and I) spot start him on 2 occassions. He came up big for us. My concern with Cassell is whether the O will take a step back with the departure of Charlie Weiss. Feel confident to draft him in round 7 as a sleeper QB with possible top 10 numbers. He is ranked #6 on ESPN’s Qualified QB Ratings Leaders (I used those numbers for these rankings).

Joe Flacco – I have big concerns with the Flacco train. I know that he also came off his best statistical year – 3622 yards, 25 TDs, and 10 picks. Three issues develop for me here 1) they fired his beloved QB coach that led him to this numbers. Harbaugh and the QB coach did not see eye to eye on Flacco’s game management and development. With a new coach in play I fear that Flacco will take a step backward in his young career. I will steer away from Flacco in my 2011-12 drafts. 2) Flacco gets sacked a ton- 40 sacks to be exact! Sacks hurt fantasy numbers. 3) Will Derrick Mason be back? Flacco’s safety blanket isn’t getting any younger. TJ Housh was a bust for Baltimore. Flacco enjoyed Boldin yet they weren’t always on the same page. If Mason doesn’t return Flacco will regress. No Doubt.

Stop back Monday for my next 4 QB’s. I will focus my next piece on the future. The next Sam Bradfords if you will 🙂
