For What It’s Worth… Fantasy Football’s Winners and Losers for Week 16

Most of you will have finished your fantasy season over the weekend. For those few of you who were winners, congratualations. For the rest of you, I feel your pain.

Week 16 Fantasy Winners

Jerome Simpson – Who is that, you ask? I’ll tell you. He’s a 24 year-old, 6-foot-2, 195 pound wide receiver for the Cincinnati Bengals. Before last week’s game, he had just 3 receptions in 3 starts over the last 3 years. But this week he took advantage of the absences of Terrell Owens and Chad Ochocinco by netting 6 receptions for 124 yards and 2 touchdowns. Fellow Bengals receiver Jermaine Gresham had 4 catches for 56 yards and a touchdown. Tossing them the scores was Cincinnati QB Carson Palmer, who finished with 16 completions off of 21 attempts for 269 yards, 4 touchdowns and no interceptions.

Mario Manningham – And the revolving door that is the New York Giants receiving-corps continues to spin, as this time Manningham has a big game. He only had four receptions, but he turned them into 132 yards and a touchdown.. That included an 85-yard score, which probably would have netted you bonus points in your fantasy league. Green Bay wideout Jordy Nelson also had a long score, catching four passes for 124 yards and an 80-yard touchdown. Packers running back John Kuhn had some silly stats. He touched the ball 8 times, gained 29 yards, and scored 3 touchdowns. Sometimes life just isn’t fair. Another solid fantasy contributor was Aaron Rodgers, who completed 25 of his 37 pass attempts for 404 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Jamaal Charles – Charles’ 77 yards from 13 carries is reasonably impressive, but when you add his 4 receptions for 40 yards and two touchdowns, he becomes the top-scoring fantasy running back for week 16. Passing him the scores was Kansas City QB Matt Cassel, who finished with 24 completions from 34 attempts, 314 yards and 3 touchdowns. The third went to fantasy god Dwayne Bowe, who turned 6 grabs into 153 yards and a touchdown. Tennessee also had some fantasy winners in this one; Kenny Britt had 4 receptions for 89 yards and a touchdown, and tight end Jared Cook had 5 grabs for 96 yards and a score.

Matt Forte – The third-year back had 169 combined yards through 19 rushes and 4 receptions, and had a 22-yard rushing touchdown in the first quarter. Chicago also had wide receiver Johnny Knox catch 4 passes for 92 yards and 2 touchdowns from QB Jay Cutler, who finished with 13 completions from 25 attempts, 215 yards, 3 touchdowns, 1 pick and a rushing score.

The Tampa Bay Offense – Here’s the stats: Josh Freeman (21/26, 237 yards, 5 TD), Kellen Winslow (7 receptions, 98 yards, 2 TD), Mike Williams (3 receptions, 44 yards, 2 TD), LeGarrette Blount (18 rushes, 164 yards). Welcome to studs-ville.

Week 16 Fantasy Losers

Mike Tolbert – On his first carry, he lost a fumble that was recovered by Vincent Jackson. On his second and third, he gained 6 and 4 yards respectively. On his fourth, he fumbled the ball again. This time he lost it, and left the game with an injury. That all adds up to a bad fantasy score.

Ryan Fitzpatrick – I hope you didn’t start him. At times this season he was a stud, but he showed otherwise last week. While he did pass for 251 yards, he also threw 3 picks and lost 2 fumbles.

Kevin Boss – This one’s a personal one for me. After New England TE Aaron Hernandez was ruled out, I subbed in Boss in my championship game and he went on to score a flat 0. No catches, no yards, no scores. No points.
