Brandon Tate VS Mike Thomas

Sorry for the 2 day delay my Internet wireless router imploded. A reader brought up a great point for this week. For a bye week replacement player who should he start? Brandon Tate VS Mike Thomas. This is a great example of having to know the rules of your league- is it TD only? 0.5 PPR? 1 PPR? TD&Yardage, etc, etc. Lets break down the pros and cons.

I view Brandon Tate as a boom or bust type of player. His value increases if your league gives points for return yardage. I give Tate the advantage in TD only leagues. The reason? He may return a punt or kickoff for a TD. When Moss was traded EVERYONE (myself included) thought Tate was going to take his place. Well, King Belichick was smarter then us and went and grabbed Deion Branch. Tate has had three 20 points weeks and two 3 point weeks in PPR leagues. He has only had 1 TD all year however and this makes his upside limited. If you are looking for the homerun then Tate is your man. However, Tate is going up against PIT and they have a good D. The D is only ranked 21 against the pass. Initially you see this number and say hmm Tate is a play. I disagree in a PPR league because he is not a integral part of the offense.

Mike Thomas is more a classic PPR receiver. He has had five games scoring more then 13 points in a PPR league. He is the possesion receiver on Jacksonville and Garrad is coming off a career game. Thomas scored 15 points in that contest and I always role with the hot hand. Houston’s D in 29th against the pass. With Thomas being a vital part of the offense and Jacksonville somehow still in the mix at 4-4 I lean on Mike Thomas as the better play in the PPR league.

In essence I just wanted to make sure people realize the importance of understanding your league rules (PPR vs Non-PPR) and whether you get return yardage for your players.
