Torain the Barbarian…Shanahan the Loyalist

It seems that running backs off waivers is becoming the norm. It’s only week 5 and look at this list of players: Ryan Torain, Chris Ivory, Ladell Betts, Kenneth Darby, Kareem “Huggy Bear’s 10 mins of fame” Huggins, LaGarrett Blount,  Mike Bell (w/ LeSean Mccoy going down), James Starks, and so on and so on. There is only 1 true back of value this week in fantasy play- Ryan “The Barbarian” Torain.  I wrote a piece earlier this week eluding to Torain being a shanagan. Looks like he is now the feature back in Washington. Now, this is partly due to circumstance because Portis “heard” his hamstring pop. The other factor is that Shanahan’s tried and true blocking scheme allow any RB to excel. You require two things to work in his system 1) be a BULL and hit the holes HARD and 2) some speed….not massive amounts just some. Ryan Torain fits the bill and will be a borderline RB2/RB3 going against GB this week. I gotta be honest Shanahan amazes me with his loyalty. He took a back that played for him sparingly in Denver who was out of the NFL last year and handed him the keys to the Redskin’s running game. In Shanahan I Trust. I have so much trust in Shanahan that I may be inserting Torain into my lineup. This of course depends on if I can sell LT while his value is high.

Besides Torain I feel that Starks and Bell hold the most value. With Mccoy’s rib injury Bell might be thrust into the spotlight. He can catch the ball so he may serve as a great check down option for Kolb. Especially since it looks like Kolb has confidence issues and is afraid to throw the ball down the field. Bell may not put up 30+ points like Mccoy but he is worth at least 15-20 if Mccoy can’t go.

James Starks is a interesting one Mr. Grinch. He is coming off the PUP list in week 7 (last I read) and GB is straight up desperate for a RB. Buffalo is over playing their hand with Lynch so it looks like they will be stuck with him. I for one day would love to be Buffalo management so I could save that franchise. They were once so proud and now that are pathetic. Going to Buffalo is like playing in the CFL. So Starks is explosive and if he can stay healthy he may be enough to keep GB marching to a possible Superbowl.

I would advocate picking Starks and Bell of waivers this week.  Lagarrette Blount is also worth a flier but I wouldn’t waste a waiver claim on him. Wait till you can get him as an add/drop. Morris has hinted that Blount might be his goal line back. He also compared him to Mike Alstodt (sp) and those are some big shoes to fill. With Caddy struggling and failing to find burst Blount may see the field sooner rather than later. Lets not forget Morris’s team is 2-1 and they have a shot to beat Cincy. Especially since they were on bye and had two weeks to game plan. I have a feeling that Blount might be part of that plan. I still can’t believe that Kareem Huggins has fallen out of the mix. Huggins injury is Blount’s gain.

I’ll be back later today with my thoughts on what WRs are worth waivers. Not as many WRs as there are RBs but there are a handful if you go digging like I always do.
