Who will be the next Favre in Fantasy Play?

Who will it be? Last year no one could have anticipated Favre throwing for 4200 yards, 30 TDs, and ONLY 7 picks. Especially after a year with the Jets where he threw for 3400 yards, 22 TDs, and 22 picks. This year I have advocated taken a QB late in drafts. In rounds 5 and 6 you are able to obtain Favre, Flacco, Ryan, Kolb, Palmer, Mcnabb, and Cutler.

The key here is trying to determine which player off that list can put up numbers like Favre the 2009 model. I favor Flacco and Kolb. I feel those two have the best shot at giving you 4000+ yards, 25 TDs, 18 picks. All of the above QBs are going to have good years and will be solid fantasy options. I just think Kolby Flacco are a touch above the other 5.

Kolb will have a larger amount of interceptions. Mainly because he truly is a timing / rhythm passer. Kolb throws to spots on the field where he assumes the WR will be. This is in stark contrast to Mcnabb who waits till the WR reaches the spot and guns it. Mcnabb had great stats because of the system. He was the antithesis of accurate. In fact, being from Philly, I can tell you I have never seen a QB throw at someone’s feet as much as Dmac.

This isn’t to say I don’t respect Dmac. I have deep routed respect for that man. He accomplished a ton playing in an offense that did not work to his strengths. I honestly believe that Dmac will have tremendous success with Washington. The Shanahans are offensive geniuses. Mike had an amazing offense in Denver. Don’t overlook Kyle who was the offensive juggernaut behind the Houston offense. The Redskins are going to surprise some people. In fantasy play I like Chris Cooley, Santana Moss, and Clinton Portis to be solid players.

Kolb will make his “rookie” mistakes. He will also take chances that Donovan never would. I watched the first two preseason games. Ok, I won’t lie – I watched two quarters of two preseason Eagles games to assess Kolb. I feel that he has met the hype. Kolb is also going to be a bye product of the Reid system. The Eagles offense has offensive weapons that are growing into their prime. The Eagles have two stud WRs in DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin, a stud TE in Celek, and a catching RB in Mccoy. All of these players are extremely close in age.

Flacco will put up 3800 yards, 26 TDs, 7 picks. Flacco is in his 3rd year. They have finally gotten him the deep threat weapons in Boldin and Stallworth. The Ravens are more balanced when it comes to the run. That is why I feel he will have slightly less yardage then Kolb. He will also throw less picks. Flacco has the arm and he has proven that. Now is his time to shine with his new toys. Its like getting that brand new sports car you always wanted. You still have that beaten down old pickup in Mason. Slow, steady, and dependable for that clutch 3rd down grab. Add to that the shiny fast new sports car in the Boldin/Stallworth combo and you are looking at a legit Superbowl run.

I do have Kolb in a PPR league and I plan on taking Flacco at my TD only draft next week.

—Honorable mention does go to Jay Cutler. I originally was going to write this piece about him. That was of course until some negative press came out of Chicago. Looks like Jay is having some difficulty adapting to Martz’s offense. I can’t figure out this Chicago team. They could be 3-13 or 10-6. There is so much in flux with this offense. Who is the #1 RB? Who is the “real” #1 WR? Will Greg Olsen actually be used by Martz? Only time will tell. With so much cause for concern I have steered clear of Cutler in all drafts.
