Fantasy Football – Trades, Morons, and Matchups Week 1

If you look close at this picture you will see a Giants logo at the top. It is fitting because a top prognosticator at fftoday.com believes Danny Ware will be the next great come from nowhere RB! I officially think he is on crack! That being said I give him credit for going on the record with such a gutsy statement. Due to this unforeseen prediction I will be glancing at the box score from week to week to see if there is ANY chance he might be onto something.

While on the moronic topic listen to this trade. Some Cowboys homer traded Tom Brady and Reggie Wayne for Terrell Owens, Tony Romo and Roy E. Williams. Not only did he trade for them but he did it in a KEEPER league. TO is on a downward decline and we don’t know if Roy Williams can play in Dallas. That leaves Romo for Brady which I still think is a bad play but you never know in fantasy sports. Brady is coming off a big injury and he is 32 and Romo is only 29. Dallas can argue that Romo still has upside. Nonetheless I think this was a HORRIFIC trade and the owner of that fantasy team needs a pee-pee whacking!

Now with the unbelievable stuff out of the way lets get down to some match up issues. Week 1 is the toughest week in fantasy football. Mainly because you don’t know if your sleepers are for real and there is the classic out think yourself strategy. Typically I will say play conservative week 1. Don’t do anything too fancy. That being said that is why Quentin Demps is no longer a starting safety for the Eagles. That honor goes to a man with the first name Macho. A FIFTH ROUND pick WHO NEVER PLAYED safety in college! It looks like Brian Dawkins is getting the last laugh and I AM LOVING IT!

I have been asked this question by a reader. Who should “Tom” start? Laurent Robinson (one of my sleepers), Isaac Bruce, or Percy Harvin? Well Robinson plays SEA, Bruce plays AZ, and Harvin plays CLE. All three players have good matchups. What do we know? Robinson was the #1 WR until Avery came back from injury early. Bruce is the #2 WR and Harvin is the #3 WR. Harvin has the boom factor but I don’t believe he will be on the field enough in the first 3-4 weeks. Bruce is the safe play because he is the possesion receiver. Understand he is the possesion receiver on a run first offense. They are playing AZ week 1 so they will be behind (a check plus for Bruce). Robinson has SEA and the SEA secondary has issues. Robinson may list as the #2 but he was the #1 all preseason. Avery is back but he will be limited in week 1 and will not be back to form. I play Robinson while he is a viable option.

Another reader asked do I start Clinton Portis, Reggie Bush, or Fred Jackson? This is simple answer- Clinton Portis! Reggie Bush has the BOOM factor and he is playing DET AND Pierre Thomas probably isn’t going to play. If you are a TRUE gambler then insert Bush. But I go back to my week 1 motto “don’t out think yourself.” Go with the safe play in Portis. He is the only real back in WAS and they are playing NYG. It will be a grind em’ out NFC match up with running attacks for both offenses. Fred Jackson has NE this week. Nuff Said.

My final match up of the day for a TD only league: Earl Bennett vs Devin Hester. Both options stink. If you are starting those two in a TD only league you are in trouble. If I must pick I take Bennett. Only because he is taller and is more of a deep threat with the “Vanderbilt” hook up.

More match ups to come tomorrow. If anyone else wants advice you know how to find me. On the WAIVER WIRE pick up Cadillac Williams. Out of nowhere he became the starting back. Doesn’t mean much now because TB is going with a three man RB system. But down the road you might get some value from the broken down Cadillac.
