Auction Draft Tips

So today is my first of two auction drafts. I figured I would share some of my nontraditional tips. People always get caught up in bidding wars. Even I fell for it last year I bid up for Larry Johnson and that was a HUGE bust. I paid $18 for a player who should have stayed under $10. That being said I am going with an approach that may seem insane but I feel is very logical. I am going to pay a premium for 2 players. A QB and RB from the same team. I would say go Breeze/Thomas or McNabb/Westbrook but I believe those two will cost too much. Plus, McNabb/Westbook have high injury risk and it looks like P. Thomas is hurt as well (sprained MCL). I recommend spending no more then $50 in a league where your cap is $100 for the LT/Rivers combo. That is $50 for two players that will consistently produce. I believe LT is back this year and I know Rivers is the real deal. After that I would follow one of two strategies. 1) Sit back and see if you can cherry pick two 2nd tier WRs like Royal, Welker, Bowe, and maybe a Lance Moore for around $10-12. 2) Pay up for one stud WR like a Moss, AJ, or a Fitz. If you do get two mid range WRs or 1 stud WR you should have spent about $70 left($50 for LT/Rivers and $20 for high tier WR). This leaves you $30 to fill out your roster. Time to go for my sleepers that you know are going to get time.

Go for Laurent Robinson (#1 WR STL), Earl Bennett (#2 WR CHI), Davone Bess (#2 WR MIA), Troy Williamson (#2 WR JAX), Miles Austin (#2 WR DAL if Williams stays hurt) and Austin Collie (#3 WR IND). You can get this guys for $1-3 a piece. Say you get all 4 for $3 that leaves you $18 to grab a TE (go cheap say $2), a RB (2nd tier like Benson or Hightower for $7-10), $3 for a DEF, and $3 for a K.

If you follow this approach it won’t guarantee you the Superbowl but it will get you into the playoffs. After that it is up to the fantasy football gods.
